OUGD201 - Design Production for Print
'Good' depends on your perspective, ethics, creative preferences, likes and dislikes (amongst other things). It is a matter of opinion rather than a statement of fact. You need to decide what is 'good' and design something that communicates your opinion, supports your argument or delivers your point of view.
Identify, research and present your opinions of what is 'good'.
Select 1 object, 1 place, 1 activity, 1 opinion and 1 concept that you think are good. Use the summer to find out what is good about them. Gather a broad range of research, and set up a blog to document and evaluate your findings.
Prepare a 3 minute presentation that focuses on 1 of the above subjects and summarises your findings. Aim to prove that you are right, make everyone believe you, as well as proposing methods of informing, persuading or educating others through a range of print formats.
Notes
- this is about where you are heading as a graphic designer and what you are interested in
- the research that you collect leads into the first module of the year.
- "good" is used so much, what does it mean to you?
- answers could be ethical, political, creative, aesthetic, cultural
- become the expert of your five!
- need to prove it is good with your research: statistics; questionnaires; charts
- think about possible print formats for use
- blog over summer, things can change when you investigate them
- start investigating how you can convince people something is good
Over summer I have been collecting research for each category, my ideas sometimes changing.
I started this task by brainstorming things that make me 'me', to give me some initial ideas.
Me
Graphic design, photography, sewing, baking, food, cooking, cakes, clothes, jewellery, fashion, wardrobe, shoes, bags, shopping, make-up, drawing, love, romance, disney, lie-ins, bed, sleeping, girlie girl, organised, ambitious, neat, planning, optimistic, angelic, magazines, books, pattern, prints, homely, illustration, comfy, stressed, busy, purposeful, helping, hardworking, friends & family, wine, beer, cheesy music, stumble upon, doctor who, sci fi, chick flicks, hiking, camping, rock-climbing, scouts, guides, jamborees, geeky, religion, holidays, clever ideas, drinking tea, memories, crafts
After this, I went from not knowing where to start to having too many ideas in my head!
Initial Ideas
After visiting New Blood and New Designers in London, I found lots of work that was relevant to some of my initial ideas. But this also made me think that everything has been done before! So while I did find lots of beautiful illustrations and inspiring pieces of design, I thought I should re-think my ideas, to find something more original, and personal to me. For example, an initial idea for the object was the camera. I know that other members of the group have chosen this for something they think is good, and looking around the designs in London, there were so many already featuring my ideas. I think this would have been quite an easy idea to back up as being good, so I decided to change my idea. However, as I did start collecting research for this object, I have still included this to show how things have developed.
Initial subjects
1. Activity - photography, baking, searching the web, getting organised, creating, reading, reminiscing, scouting
2. Concept - work hard play hard, do something amazing everyday, you get out what you put in, all we have is now, everything has been done before, up cycling, reduce, reuse, recycle
3. Opinion - look after the planet, love, charity starts at home, graphic design is the best subject, being stressed is better than being bored
4. Object - camera, pencil, computer, cup of tea, needle, sewing basket
5. Place - wardrobe, museum, gallery, bed, home, internet, dreamland, library, outside
Final 'What Is Good?' Subjects
Final Subject
The subject I have chosen to do my presentation about is my place - A world scout jamboree. I feel like I am now an expert on this subject! Its not something I think my group will know much about so I hope to convince them that it is "good". (blog post)
