What Is Good?

Brief:

OUGD201 - Design Production for Print

'Good' depends on your perspective, ethics, creative preferences, likes and dislikes (amongst other things). It is a matter of opinion rather than a statement of fact. You need to decide what is 'good' and design something that communicates your opinion, supports your argument or delivers your point of view.

Identify, research and present your opinions of what is 'good'.

Select 1 object, 1 place, 1 activity, 1 opinion and 1 concept that you think are good. Use the summer to find out what is good about them. Gather a broad range of research, and set up a blog to document and evaluate your findings.

Prepare a 3 minute presentation that focuses on 1 of the above subjects and summarises your findings. Aim to prove that you are right, make everyone believe you, as well as proposing methods of informing, persuading or educating others through a range of print formats.

Notes

- this is about where you are heading as a graphic designer and what you are interested in
- the research that you collect leads into the first module of the year.
- "good" is used so much, what does it mean to you?
- answers could be ethical, political, creative, aesthetic, cultural
- become the expert of your five!
- need to prove it is good with your research: statistics; questionnaires; charts
- think about possible print formats for use
- blog over summer, things can change when you investigate them
- start investigating how you can convince people something is good

Over summer I have been collecting research for each category, my ideas sometimes changing.

I started this task by brainstorming things that make me 'me', to give me some initial ideas.

Me

Graphic design, photography, sewing, baking, food, cooking, cakes, clothes, jewellery, fashion, wardrobe, shoes, bags, shopping, make-up, drawing, love, romance, disney, lie-ins, bed, sleeping, girlie girl, organised, ambitious, neat, planning, optimistic, angelic, magazines, books, pattern, prints, homely, illustration, comfy, stressed, busy, purposeful, helping, hardworking, friends & family, wine, beer, cheesy music, stumble upon, doctor who, sci fi, chick flicks, hiking, camping, rock-climbing, scouts, guides, jamborees, geeky, religion, holidays, clever ideas, drinking tea, memories, crafts

After this, I went from not knowing where to start to having too many ideas in my head!

Initial Ideas

After visiting New Blood and New Designers in London, I found lots of work that was relevant to some of my initial ideas. But this also made me think that everything has been done before! So while I did find lots of beautiful illustrations and inspiring pieces of design, I thought I should re-think my ideas, to find something more original, and personal to me. For example, an initial idea for the object was the camera. I know that other members of the group have chosen this for something they think is good, and looking around the designs in London, there were so many already featuring my ideas. I think this would have been quite an easy idea to back up as being good, so I decided to change my idea. However, as I did start collecting research for this object, I have still included this to show how things have developed.

Initial subjects

1. Activity - photography, baking, searching the web, getting organised, creating, reading, reminiscing, scouting
2. Concept - work hard play hard, do something amazing everyday, you get out what you put in, all we have is now, everything has been done before, up cycling, reduce, reuse, recycle
3. Opinion - look after the planet, love, charity starts at home, graphic design is the best subject, being stressed is better than being bored
4. Object - camera, pencil, computer, cup of tea, needle, sewing basket
5. Place - wardrobe, museum, gallery, bed, home, internet, dreamland, library, outside

Final 'What Is Good?' Subjects

Final Subject

The subject I have chosen to do my presentation about is my place - A world scout jamboree. I feel like I am now an expert on this subject! Its not something I think my group will know much about so I hope to convince them that it is "good". (blog post)

Concept

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

This is a good concept, because it helps to save the environment, as well as saving you money.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Reduce

Companies are being challenged to reduce the amount of packaging they use. More often that not, its not needed, and is just used to make a product look bigger. Think about how easter egg boxes have shrunk in the past few years. And the coffee bean advert where they have tried no packaging at all!

It has been shown in the news recently that food sell-by dates are to be scrapped to try to reduce the £12bn worth of food the UK wastes each year. Story from bbc news:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Scrap food sell-by dates, government urges manufacturers

Sell-by dates should be removed from food packaging to help cut waste and save shoppers money, ministers say.

The UK throws away about £12bn of edible food each year and critics say confusing packaging is partly to blame.

New government advice says firms should include only use-by or best-before dates and remove sell-by and display-until labels relating to stock control.
The British Retail Consortium said a better approach would be to educate people on what the dates mean.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) says five million tonnes of edible food is discarded by UK households annually - the equivalent of £680 for a household with children.
Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said confusion over food labelling was responsible for an estimated £750m of the £12bn edible-food wastage each year.
'Not relevant'
"We want to end the food labelling confusion and make it clear once and for all when food is good and safe to eat," she said.
She wants confusing stock rotation information - such as sell-by dates - removed from packaging altogether.

“Start Quote

We always emphasise that use-by dates are the most important, as these relate to food safety”
Liz RedmondFood Standards Agency
"There are products that have several dates on them; use by, best before. Sometimes it says 'display until', which is not relevant at all by the time it's sitting in your fridge," Ms Spelman told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"So I can understand when people - particularly young people starting out with shopping - look at these dates and say 'I'm not sure about this; better throw it away'."
Compliance with the new guidance is not required by law, although Defra says businesses are legally bound to label food with either a use-by or best-before date.
Its guidance says foods likely to require a use-by date - meaning they could become dangerous to eat - include soft cheese, ready-prepared meals and smoked fish.
Foods likely to require only a best-before date - meaning they may lose quality but are still safe to consume - include biscuits, jams, pickles, crisps and tinned foods.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is backing the new advice."We always emphasise that use-by dates are the most important, as these relate to food safety," said its head of hygiene and microbiology, Liz
Redmond.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Reuse

Don't just throw things out when you're done with them, see if you can reuse them, and if you can't, the chances are someone else can. For example, unwanted clothes could be given to a charity shop.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Recycle

This is probably the part of this concept that you can do the most about. Recycling isn't just about recycling your rubbish, its so much more. If you're thinking of throwing something away, stop and think how it could be 'up cycled'. I'm quite crafty so this appeals to me.

UK recycling statistics [uk-energy-saving.com]

  • The proportion of our household waste which is being recycled is increasing.
  • In 2009/10 household recycling rates were at 39.7%.
  • Over 9.4 million tonnes of waste were sent for recycling or composting in 2009/10 compared to 9.1 million tonnes in 2008/09.
  • 14.3 million tonnes of household waste was not recycled, composted or re-used in 2009/10, a decrease of 6.0 per cent from 2008/09.
These statistics show that recycling is on the up, but still there is so much more to be done.

Recycling Facts
  • On average every person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every seven weeks.
  • Every UK household produces over one tonne of rubbish every year.
  • Every eight months the UK produces enough waste to fill Lake Windermere.
  • It is estimated that there are 90 million redundant mobile phones in the UK.
  • Over Christmas as much as 83km² of wrapping paper will end up in UK rubbish bins, enough to cover an area larger than Guernsey.
  • Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a colour TV for 15 minutes.
  • Glass will not decompose in landfill but can be recycling without loss of purity.
  • 70% less energy is required to recycle paper than making it from raw materials
  • The energy saved by recycling one plastic bottle will power a 60W light bulb for six hours.
  • Once an aluminium can is recycled it can be part of new can within six weeks.
  • If all the aluminium cans sold in the UK were recycled, there would be 14 million fewer full dustbins each year.
  • It takes just 25 two litre drink bottles to make one adult size fleece.
  • 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.
Some of these interesting facts may be well known, whereas some may be quite shocking, but they all prove how beneficial recycling is to the environment.

Good concept

On the topic of things being 'good', I have been reading one of the books off the reading list: 'Good: an introduction to ethics in graphic design'.

"we should go beyond its artistic and functional merits and ask questions about it's 'goodness' in a wider social context"  "is the design efficient in its use of materials and production techniques, and can it be disposed of or recycled without causing harm or involving great cost?"

Upcycling

Definitions:
'The process of taking something that would be thrown away and turning it into something useful'
'Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.'
'The practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value.'

Examples - Graphic design

Tea towels

My friend bought this interesting towel from Liberty in London, where an old tea towel has been brought to life with a new design screen printed on top.

Tickets - From D&AD New Blood exhibitor [harrysmithdesign.co.uk]

These tickets that I saw at New Blood are partly what inspired this project. So many train tickets must be wasted everyday as they have no use once the journey is over, but this is a great idea, to screen print over the ticket to turn it into a new ticket. This idea stood out after the exhibition from all the others as it looks good, but is good for the environment too.

A similar graphic design project I found when researching "what is graphic design for?"

Graphic design is for promotion. These very modern type focused designs are to promote a traditional village green festival. The problem is that an event needs advertising but the organisers and designers wanted the promotion to be environmentally friendly in fitting with the event. To solve this problem, the designers used 100% recycled materials, including the t-shirts, which are old T's with the new logo printed over them. The potential audience are those in Southend-on-sea, but the new modern design of bold typography and simple imagery representing bunting will also draw in younger crowds as they are 'cool' designs. The audience will interact with the pieces by using them, visiting the event and then re-cycling the designs.

Decopatch - giving something a new life

This is a crafty way to up cycle anything. I made these old, plain photo frames into pretty decorations for my room by gluing them with special deco patch paper and glue.

Here are some more creative deco patch ideas I have found on the internet.

It makes you think why buy a new object, when you can just reuse your initial object by decorating it to look how you want! Its a cheaper, creative and more fun way of getting something new.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

From my experiences of living with other people, I know not everyone is as keen on recycling as I am. I was shocked to find that some places don't have recycling bins provided, so all rubbish in some places is waste. To get an idea of peoples opinions on recycling, I asked a few questions:

- Do you recycle? Yes [10] No [0]
- How regularly do you recycle? All the time [2] Most of the time [7] Rarely [1] Never [0]
- How bothered are you about your effect on the environment? Very [1] A little [6] Unconcerned [3]

Opinion

I think "Time is precious" is a good opinion to have, because it makes you really want to get the most out of your life. The best advice I have been given is simple, but is to "not waste time, do something amazing everyday". A teacher told me this as I left high school 4 years ago, but it still helps to motivate me when I'm wasting my time being lazy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Quotes

As it is a quote that started this opinion for me that time is precious, I decided to look at more quotes, as well as songs, which feature that opinion that time is precious.

-"Dont waste time, or time will waste you" Muse - Knights of Cydonia

-"Time stops for no one, and moves on unaware, its easy not to notice, its easy not to care" Lindsay Lohan - Very Last Moment in Time

-"We are always waiting for our lives to begin, figuring we will be someone else someday; but all we have is now, so don't run from it" Mouth (One Tree Hill - The Same Deep Water As You)

- Time is precious, decide how you will spend it
- Time is money
- All good things must come to an end
- For every minute spent in organizing, an hour is earned
- Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back
- The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once
- Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking.
- You can't change the past, but you can ruin the present by worrying about the future
- Don’t count every hour in the day, make every hour in the day count
- Yesterday is a canceled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have - so spend it wisely
- We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they're called memories. Some take us forward, they're called dreams
- Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time
- We don't have an eternity to realize our dreams, only the time we are here
- Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity
- Lost time is never found again
- Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein
- They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself
- Time is like a handful of sand- the tighter you grasp it, the faster it runs through your fingers
- Many of the things you can count, don't count. Many of the things you can't count, really count.
- It is never too late to be what you might have been
- What may be done at any time will be done at no time
- Say what you want to say when you have the feeling and the chance. My greatest regrets are the things I did not do, the opportunities missed and the things unsaid
- Time you enjoyed wasting is not wasted time
- We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand - and melting like a snowflake
- We always have time enough if we will but use it right
- The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time
- There'll be two dates on your tombstone, but all that matters is that little dash in between them
- Be wise in the use of time. The question in life is not "how much time do we have?" The question is "what shall we do with it?"
- Time flies. Its up to you to be the navigator
- When we are doing what we love, we don't care about time. For at least at that moment, time doesn't exist and we are truly free
- You may delay, but time will not
- Your greatest resource is your time
- Many of us spend half our time wishing for things we could have if we didn't spend half our time wishing
- Never let yesterday use up today
- One problem with gazing too frequently into the past is that we may turn around to find the future has run out on us
- One realises the full importance of time when their is little left of it
- In truth, people can generally make time for what they choose to do; it is not really the time but the will that is lacking
- Time is at once the most valuable and the most perishable of our possessions
- Time is like money, the less of it we have to spare, the further we make it go

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Passing time has always interested me, and these are some images from a GCSE fine art project. This project was inspired by Claude Monet, who often painted the same scene at different times in the day or in different seasons.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

This story from motivateus.com shows how time is money, but time is more precious that money:

Precious Time

With a timid voice and idolizing eyes, the little boy greeted his father as he returned from work,"Daddy, how much do you make an hour?"
Greatly surprised, but giving his boy a glaring look, the father said, "Look, son, not even your mother knows that. Don't bother me now, I'm tired."
"But Daddy, just tell me please! How much do you make an hour, " the boy insisted.
The father, finally giving up, replied: "Twenty dollars per hour."
"Okay, Daddy? Could you loan me ten dollars?" the boy asked.
Showing his restlessness and positively disturbed, the father yelled, "So that was the reason you asked how much I earn, right? Go to sleep and don't bother me anymore!"
It was already dark and the father was meditating on what he said and was feeling guilty? Maybe he thought, his son wanted to buy something.
Finally, trying to ease his mind, the father went to his son's room. "Are you asleep, son?" asked the father.
"No, Daddy. Why?" replied the boy, partially asleep.
"Here's the money you asked for earlier," the father said.
"Thanks, Daddy!" rejoiced the son, while putting his hand under his pillow and removing some money. "Now I have enough!! Now I have twenty dollars!" the boy said to his father, who was gazing at his son, confused at what his son had just said.
"Daddy, could you sell me one hour of your time?"
Time is too precious to spend it all on work! Appreciate your love ones and don't take them for granted.

What others think about this opinion

Questionnaire
How effected are you by 'inspiring' quotes such as "time is precious"? Very [1] A little [3] Not at all [6]
Do you feel you use your own time effectively? Yes [6] No [4]
Would you like to be motivated to use your time more effectively? Yes [6] No [4]

Analysing Results
People don't really seem to find these quotes inspiring, as most commented that they think they are nonsense. It is true that a lot of the quotes are irrelevant and not really inspiring, as the compile the list above I had to search through many more quotes which I didn't think were motivating. Despite more people saying that they felt they used their own time effectively than not doing so, the majority of people would be interested in being motivated to use their own time even more effectively. These results don't really prove that my opinion is a good one to have, but they do show that there is an audience that would like to be motivated.

Benefits of using opinion quotes like "time is precious"

- Makes you realise what your priorities are
- Makes you want to get the most out of every day, to be organised and not waste time
- Makes you want to do great things now, instead of in the future

Activity

I love baking cakes, and eating them! I think baking is good because its therapeutic and relaxing, and you make something which is pretty and tasty. Here are some of the cakes I have made:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Process

Ingredients

  • 125g/4oz butter or margarine, softened
  • 125g/4oz caster sugar
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 125g/4oz self raising flour

    Preparation method

    1. - Heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
    2. - Line two 18cm/7in cake tins with baking parchment
      - Cream the butter and the sugar together until pale. Use an electric hand mixer if you have one.
      1. - Beat in the eggs.
      2. - Sift over the flour and fold in using a large metal spoon.
      3. - The mixture should be of a dropping consistency; if it is not, add a little milk.
      4. - Divide the mixture between the cake tins and gently spread out with a spatula. Bake for 20-25 minutes until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Allow to stand for 5 minutes before turning on to a wire rack to cool.

- Sandwich the cakes together with jam, lemon curd or whipped cream and berries or just enjoy on its own.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Benefits

Why is baking a good activity? Here are some benefits:
Therapeutic, creative, productive, practical skill, makes good present, potential to earn money, easy, lots of different varieties, and of course because you get to eat the result!
For graphic designers at Leeds College of Art, lets not forget baking is good practice for the annual typogateux competition!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I even did a project on cakes for my graphic design A level:

Give In To Temptation

For the sake of Art, I got to bake lots of cakes, and then eat them.
I also created the packaging and advertisements for the opening of a fictional cake store, Sweetheart Candy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other cool cakes!

I love decorated cakes, and often try my hand at it whenever theres a birthday coming up, but I'm not too neat. And the annual BAGD typogateux competition is the perfect excuse for more practice! I wish I could create cakes as amazing as these:

Place

A World Scout Jamboree is a good place to be for me, and I think it will be interesting to try to convince the rest of the group that a jamboree is good seeing as people outside of scouting probably won't even know what one is!

I've been on two jamboree's, one in Essex in 2007 as a participant, and one this summer, in Sweden as a member of the international service team (IST). They really are life changing experiences and so I want to share them with everyone! Being a member of the IST was quite a different experience from my first jamboree, but I had such an amazing experience that I wanted to be able to give something back and let others have a great time too.

I have been involved in guiding most of my life, starting as a rainbow, then a brownie, guide, and finally involved in senior section. When I am at home, I am a girl guide leader. I want to persuade my guides that Jamboree's are a good place to be so that they can have the same experiences and opportunities as I had.

There are around 40 million scouts worldwide, in 161 countries. Scouting gets young people ready for life through adventure and challenges that makes them grow as individuals.

What is a World Scout Jamboree?

In my words:

A world scout jamboree is a huge international 2 week gathering of Scouts and Guides from all over the world. It provides the participants with the chance to try new activities, face their fears, learn about other cultures, make new friends and many more opportunities. It is a fun camp, with ceremonies, parades and themed days. Thousands of helpers (leaders, IST, CMT) give up their time so that the participants will have an amazing time!

Definition:

- The World Scout Jamboree is a Scouting jamboree of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, typically attended by several tens of thousands of Scouts from around the world, aged 14 to 17.

- Every four years, tens of thousands of Scouts, from every corner of the world, gather in a tented city for two weeks of activities and adventure!
This is a fantastic event where up to 40,000 Scouts live and learn together. This is an amazing first-hand experience of multiculturalism in action, an opportunity to interact and participate with others from different cultures and to build solidarity and understanding across cultural and geographical boundaries.
Aimed at 14 to 17 year olds, Scouts attend the event in national groups, called Contingents. There is one contingent from each country where there are Scouts recognised by the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM), and currently there are 160 member countries in WOSM! The event is supported by thousands of international adult volunteers, and a special Scout solidarity fund helps to ensure that representatives attend from as many countries as possible. This is a peace building exercise on an enormous scale!
The World Scout Jamboree truly is an amazing unique experience: for participants, for staff, and even for the visitors who come to see the camp in action!

Themes

Each jamboree has a theme which represents what the activities will be at the jamboree, and also issues that the participants will learn and think about.

2007

One World, One Promise:
About the jamboree

The jamboree gives participants the chance to experience the unique atmosphere of this special global community, where world Scouting, cultures, faiths, cuisine and performance will combine to form the biggest ever Scouting event.

Celebrations:
7th August, Closing Ceremony: A spectacular performance and firework display will mark the Closing Ceremony to help capture the memories of adventure and friends at the Jamboree.

Adult Support
--International Service Team: A team of 8,000 adults from across the world working as the backbone of the Jamboree. Tasks will range from running activities, working with transport, food distribution and providing medical services
-- Organising/Delivery Team: A team of around 250 volunteers who will look after the management and delivery of various elements of the Jamboree. Many of these volunteers have been working on this project for the past five years;
-- Build/Take Down Team: From the beginning of July 2007, this team has been working on all aspects of preparing the site for the Jamboree. Some tasks include putting up tents, laying cables, building gateways, and sorting out banners and fabrics;
-- Off-site Programme Team: A team of 1,000 specialist activity instructors will look after activities at Splash! and Gilwell Adventure. These people will have skills in kayaking, pulling, abseiling, high ropes and much more
-- Home Hospitality: This team will host over 8,000 Scouts wanting to experience what it is like to live in the UK. From trying tea for the first time to riding on the wrong side of the street, participants are looking to see a culture in a way that most won’t! The home hospitality (or ‘Ho-Ho’) usually lasts for 3 days and will take place in homes all over the UK
-- Contingent Management and Support Teams: These teams will provide information and support to Contingents from around the world and the International Service Team leading up to and during the Jamboree.

Example activities

Water sports, learning about recycling, learning about history of scouting, trips to Gillwell park (scout base), community service days, global development activities, cooking, tasting food, food houses, learning about other religions, learning about other countries and their cultures, festivals, ceremonies, parties, concerts

- In lexicography, "Jamboree" is considered an Americanism that traces back to 1860–65 and refers to a joyful, noisy gathering. The term is believed to originate from the words jabber (rapid, indistinct talk) and shivaree (noisy celebration), with "m" from jam (crowd)

My experience

For me to attend the Jamboree in Sweden, I had to raise £850 (not including transport). The original amount was set at £1,350, which was a very scary initial thought, but was brought down  when I arranged my own transport.

Jamboree Slideshow 2007

Here are some of my photographs from my time at the Jamboree.

Here is a powerpoint presentation I made after the first jamboree to show my guide group, and groups/people that donated me money towards my jamboree fee. I have uploaded it to issuu to make it easier to view, a website recommended to me to make my blog look tidier.

Each jamboree has a song - take a listen!

'Hej Jam'

Here is a virtual copy of the magazine of the 2011 Jamboree, Hej Jam.

I was chosen to work in the media centre for the camp. I got to see how different aspects of camp media are run, and help out with these. These included: radio; TV; magazine; international press; social media and photography. This was valuable work experience with a difference - working with scouts and guides of all ages from across the world, learning new things from new cultures, all from on a campsite! One of the most exciting parts was watching the 'Hej Jam' magazine come to life. 6 issues of a short magazines about camp life, with 40,000 being printed each time.

What the results prove

Nearly everyone that I asked had been involved in either guiding or scouting at some point in their life, and a couple that hadn't commented that they wish they had been. As the results were from a survey I made online, the results are anonymous so I don't know who answered my survey or whether they were male or female. It seems the majority joined when they were younger, and then dropped out as they got older. I was surprised about how many people actually knew what a jamboree was, although not many have attended one. Some of the comments related to my aim of wanting to prove that scouting and guiding is not geeky or boring, but exciting and fulfilling. I believe Jamboree's are 'good'; now I just need to convince everyone.
